When I was a teenager I was thoroughly into mystic Britain and mystic sites around the world. Being the Seventies I wasn't alone and there were magazines and loads of books on the subject. Folk horror abounded on TV and rock bands were steeped in the old lore.
I even wrote a load of mystic songs for a band and one of them was about Silbury Hill, the legendary resting place of King Arthur and his round table of Knights.
I found this long article on Silbury Hill and thought I'd post it on case anyones interested in old hippy stuff like this!

Do you like this kind of thing? Did you as a teenager?
Strange article that jams together just about everything. Yes, liked this sort of mysticism when younger, now I just appreciate such things as amazing parts of the landscape -it's great to walk in this area, looking at the monuments, barrows etc. And nearby Devizes, I remember, had some great pubs.
ReplyDeleteGlad you liked mystic sites Andy and sounds like you still do. I was obsessed with King Arthur, Stone Circles and Tolkein when I was 17/18. Great times and places.
ReplyDeleteI’m fascinated by paleoarchaeology and mystic sites. I had a good deal of involvement with the Modern Antiquarian in 2005, when a full size replica of stonehenge was built out of styrene! Even got on tv for a bit on Channel 5s programme about the Solstice and how the henge was built. Silbury is fascinating and there have been a number of attempts to excavate the mound, including one filmed by the BBC in the fifties. I think its safe to say whoever may have been interred is still there..
ReplyDeleteI wonder if that TV programme you were in is online somewhere Wote? Is there a stone circle near you? Coincidentally, the Quatermass Ringstone Round series is on TV at the mo. Episode 1 was last week on Talking Pictures TV.
