I watched The Fan the other night on Talking TV. It starred Lauren Bacall and one Michael Beihn aka John Connor's Dad.
Watching the Fan I thought, hmmm, I recognise that score! Yep, the music was so familiar that I could even see the other film in my mind's eye.
It was the same score as The Howling! Yes, the Joe Dante schlocker about Eddie Quist and Steed from the Avengers!
How could this be?
Looking them both up I was amazed to see that I was right. Both film scores were the product of the same musical director, one Pino Donaggio!
Both The Fan and The Howling were made in 1981 so it could be that Pino had a particular style that year. Checking Wiki it's clear that Mr. Donnagio is a prolific film music director. There are loads!
