AURORA SPINDRIFT KIT RESTORATION

Further to my comment on the use of Dettol Antiseptic removing paint, here's some photos  I took for my 2016 post on the restoration  of an old Aurora Spindrift kit which I got second hand and someone had originally painted it yellow then red for some reason.

The first photo is as it was with my old cat , Felix.

It's best to leave it in soak for 24 hours, and then clean up it up, occasionally re-dipping it.

Thank you for that, I had not seen this post before. Your cat really makes that shot look like a scene from the TV series. I have been building models for well over forty years, but have only just found out about Dettol being used as a paint stripper that is safe to use on plastic - Model Collector is a British magazine devoted to die-cast models. I got my Dettol from the local supermarket, rather than a chemist. Yes, it has been hard to get recently. I did once have a jar of a special plastic paint stripper - I think it might have been by Aeromaster ? I was always put off many of the chemicals I had seen recommended for removing paint, because they all seemed highly dangerous, but Dettol is something that is familiar and safe.

    1. Felix did like to get in on the act from time to time, Paul, but it was my other cat, Oscar who enjoyed knocking things off the display. One of my Dinky Interceptors got a bit of battle damage from him.:)
Yes, Dettol Antiseptic works well, and as you mention yourself, it doesn't damage the plastic. The tricky part is taking the old kit apart with out breaking it.:/

  2. Ah, I built an Aurora Spindrift for a friend awhile back. Straight out of the box and with my limited modeling skills, it came out … okay. I did bother to get some aftermarket interior decals, which I thought were more trouble than they were worth, frankly. (I'm usually not an "interior" guy.) He loved it, but of course I could see a million things I could have done better. And unless I was off my meds that week, I think you will find that the parts fit, especially of the interior stuff, is WAY off. I thought it was the worst-fitting kit I ever ran across personally, and that includes some mid-1960s Japanese junk SF toy/models. Have fun and be careful!

    1. I did manage to rebuild it, Zigg, but because it was a bit warped I fixed the top in place, so it has a limited interior.
When in comes to awkward fitting kits, the worst for me is the AMT Man from Uncle Piranha. I'll do an article on it shortly.
