RED MOON ANNIE
To celebrate the 70th birthday of Eagle, here's a few photos of my old scratch-built Dan Dare Anastasia model I built way back in the early eighties when my only reference at the time was a 1974 Dan Dare Annual which featured a reprint of the second Dan Dare story, 'The Red Moon Mystery' originally published from October, 1951 to June , 1952.
In that story, the 'Annie' is finally abandoned in space by Dan Dare, Digby, and Prof. Peabody.
Sadly, my model has had a few knocks over the years, in particular the lower half of the starboard wing fin which has broken off, and the once clear acetate has yellowed.
But, in spite of that I thought I dust it off and take a few snaps.
In the Eagle comic, having been left in a Sargasso sea in space, the Anastasia is revived some four years later during 'The Reign of The Robots' story but this time with a slightly different and possibly more familiar hull window lay out.
Here's a close up of my 'Red Moon' layout. My lack of reference at the time meant I had to take a few guesses at some of the internal detail.
The Anastasia remained for most of the following stories until artists, Don Harley and Bruce Cornwall introduced a new craft, the oddly named Zylbat. However, when that was inadvertently destroyed by Space Fleet, once again the Anastasia returned as Dan Dare's personal spacecraft.
What a beautiful model, Mike... lovely stuff :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Iain, you do some pretty good things yourself.:)
DeleteWow, I am not familiar with the Dan Dare series, but that scratch-built model is incredible! What an amazing design, and how in the world you ever managed that clear canopy business on the top I will never know - bravo!
ReplyDeleteThanks Zig. The model is made of wood with a vac formed cover. The clear, sadly now tinted orange, canopy was made using a wooden mould and a home made vac forming box. I stopped doing scratch builds a long while back, apart from bits I use as set dressing for my photos.
Delete"Good old Annie!" I'm amazed and impressed by this! You say it was "scratch-built"... you mean you managed to create this not from a kit, but by carving it out of raw materials...? I wouldn't know how to begin something like this! Well Done! Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks Steven. I sometimes wish I'd kept up the builds as there's some great spacecraft designs in Dan Dare. Maybe one day I might return to it, but for now I'll stick to kits.
DeleteLooks brill Mike! Nice one!
ReplyDeleteThanks Woodsy. It's nice to occasionally revisit Dan Dare from time to time.:)
DeleteWow, that's super! You did an excellent job Scoop!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ed:)
DeleteHi Mike, she is a credit to you and to "Our Dan!" I am 76 years old and have many of the Hawk books, and some figures in a lage scale of dan Dare figures, namely a anonymous Treen, Dan himself, but in a yellow suit, and somewhere are more, if i can get Number One Son to recall where he put them! Moral: NEVER give your kids your favurite toys! Graet model buddy, my grandaughter and her husaband have just got a 3D printer. Cant wait for them to ask me what I want for Christmas! Very best Regards, Gary
