It seems Space:1999 fans like me might be getting yet another example of the iconic Eagle spacecraft.

Eaglemoss, as part of their Hero Collector series unveiled plans at the end of last year on producing an Eagle model towards the end of 2020.
There are very few details so far apart from the photo render above. This is apparently due to the result of a new partnership with 1TV Studios, and there's speculation that if it proves successful that other models from Space:1999 might be released.
Personally, I'm not getting my hopes up just yet as we've already had previous announcements celebrating the works by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson, like the Eaglemoss Vintage Comic Collection, which was test marketed and was cancelled after five issues, or the Atlas Editions Thunderbird Collection which ended with just a single test release of Thunderbird 2.
On the plus side, Model Space were relatively successful with a complete release of their large 1:144 scale Thunderbird 2 part work, although, I have to say that was poorly advertised in the UK,
Most Space: 1999 fans agree you can never have enough Eagles in your collection, so for now, I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that Eaglemoss get this Eagle off the launch pad.

I do wonder where this will fit in. There are already tons of Eagles out and more to come. There are the Sixteen12 twelve inch Eagles and they've announced a new series of 5 inch action toy versions, plus Round 2 doing 1/72 and 1/48 scale model kit Eagles. Is Eaglemoss planning a non-scale Eagle of similar size and price to their Galactica/Star Trek Discovery/Alien ship lines which would be lower cost than Sixteen12, or a 5 inch version like their smaller Star Trek ships, or an expensive part works over 100 issues that could cost close to a grand? Who knows? Personally I would hope they would do a line of Gerry Anderson vehicles like their Galacica range and the Eagle may be just testing the waters to see how they sell. Even if it's only the licence for 1999 there are plenty of 1999 spaceships other than Eagles. How about a Swift or Superswift anyone?
ReplyDeleteMy heart wants it to happen, but my head isn't so sure. Eaglemoss could certainly do the other ships, look at the wonderful models they did for the Batman automobilia set. There's still plenty in the pipeline from 16/12, including the 5" Eagles, but to some people the price is a little heavy. The Eaglemoss stuff would certainly be affordable, but it would probably be subscription only.
DeleteId rather they looked at a Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle or FAB 1 personally, there are enough large scale Eagles and if these don't sell because of that then I worry they will assume there is no interest in Gerry Anderson craft, which of course couldn't be farther from the truth!
ReplyDeleteBoth of those vehicles would be good to see, Nellie65, but I'm not sure there would be sufficient interest from enough fans who would spend money on them. The Product Enterprise SPV didn't sell well at the time, neither did the Corgi version. The Model Space Thunderbird 2 part work only just got released here after some cost cutting, and the Atlas Thunderbird set was cancelled following a limited trial run Thunderbird 2 release. Eagles do seem to sell. The limited run Sixteen 12 Eagles sell very well, as do most of the Round 2 kits, in spite of both being fairly expensive. I don't know whether this Eaglemoss Eagle will eventually get released, what with all that's going on, but I can understand the reasoning behind their thinking, even though, as you say there are plenty of Eagle models about.
