Most interesting. The brown paper tape should be available from art shops, or craft shops selling art supplies. I remember we had a roll of this a few decades ago, I think it was eventually used up. For those who do not want to douse their boxes in lighter fluid, may I suggest Eucalyptus Oil. I think this would be available in chemist shops. I have a bottle of fabric washing liquid intended for woollens which contains it, and this works just fine. Rub on gently, and it and will remove any sticky residue. Do not rub too hard. Also it works best on a glossy surface, it is not suitable for any surface which will absorb the oil, such as torn cardboard, or paper with a matt finish. I found out about Eucalyptus Oil after seeing someone in a second hand bookshop cleaning books, and asked what he was using. I suspect the lighter fluid works better, but this seems to be a safer alternative.
I've tried lighter fuel Paul and it does work although its a bit niffy to work with being flammable. Never heard of Eucalyptus oil as a cleaner and will look out for it. What parts of the books where being cleaned, the covers?
Yes, the covers and dust jackets, which often have a thin glossy plastic covering, so the paper does not absorb the oil. Gets rid of old Sellotape repairs, price stickers, and the like, as well as cleaning the surface. It also works on boxes and other forms of model packaging. Lighter fluid just sounds a bit scary.
