The BBC's War of the Worlds series has finished.
Just 3 episodes!
I expected more!
I enjoyed the 3 episodes though but I felt it was rushed. The decision to interplay the present and the future was a mistake I thought as it distracted from the story going forward.
More episodes would have allowed a longer narrative.
One highlight were the creatures. These were excellent and loathsome. They reminded me of a human torso with three spiky spider legs. Quite gross!
What did you think of this series?
Hated it. Dreadful characters, woeful dialogue, leaden pacing, awkward narrative structure and murky effects. Did I also say I hated it, just to be clear!
ReplyDeleteSo Kev, I'm unclear. Did you hate it? ha ha. Do you think it'll get panned?
ReplyDeleteI'm always mincing my words! I've not seen many reviews actually. They left it a long time between making and transmitting, don't know if that's significant.
ReplyDeleteQuite liked the first episode.
ReplyDeleteNot so much the second, as I couldn't see where it was going, character or story wise.
Truly awful last episode, which didn't seem to answer anything at all !
Conclusion ... in the end, compared to the '50s and 2000s movies, the Orson Welles radio production or Jeff Wayne's musical version, its the worst interpretation of the book ever.
Mish.
Completely agree guys - too much talking, terrible pacing and constant breast-beating about the writer's personal agendas (that bit where one character questioned whether this was britain's punishment for their colonisation policies...subtle eh???) Dunno who wrote this but Chibnall has probably offered them a job writing Doctor Who (don't get me started!!). Should have kept it ti 2 episodes or a single 90 minute special even.
ReplyDeleteso, not a hit then!
ReplyDeleteIn Finland this was just aired as two 90-min episodes. I was put off by many things, some of them mentioned previously, but mostly by the all-encompassing melancholy and defeatist air of the whole thing. A bit like an overlong Doctor Who episode on downers.
ReplyDeleteOh no, you too Arto! The BBC appear to have lost this particular war don't they! Maybe they should have simply re-shown the George Pal classic movie and saved a fortune!
