WHEN DID YOUR MUM START FOOD SHOPPING FOR CHRISTMAS?

I know its only mid-October but back in the day my Mum, with such a big family as ours back then, would have started preparing for Christmas already, especially the festive food.

Mum would have started to buy in supplies in advance of the big day and Boxing Day and slowly filled up the pantry with festive provisions that would last a couple of months.

Canned food would have included:

Pec luncheon meat - a tasty roll of formed pork ideal for sandwiches and buffets or simply biting like a cake. Your fave?

Tinned Ham - can't recall the Sixties brands. These cooked shaped hams were always covered in jelly and always delicious on a plate with pickled onions and slice tomatoes. Any good?

Tinned Rice Pudding - usually Ambrosia. Nowhere near as good as home-made but it was always on offer with tinned peaches or jam. One for you?

Smedleys Jam - jars of jam packed with whole strawberries usually. I miss those whole strawbs in my jam! I remember the TV advert where they stuffed them into a sealed pan.

Piccalili and Pickled Onions - Piccalili looked like yellow vomit in a glass jar but tasted delicious. Tangy and fruity but impossible to say what was in it. Pickled Onions came in two sizes: Massive and teeny. I think the teeny ones were called Silvikrins or cocktail onions. The big fellas were a brand I just can't recall. The jar was as big as a silo. Did you eat pickles?

Advocaat - Mum's tipple with lemonade and always Warninks. I always wanted to change my name to Warninks Advocaat. It sounded so James Bond villainish!

Brandy Snaps - fantastic sticky brittle biscuit tubes. Sweet pipes of delight. Where are they now?

Chocolate Brazil Nuts - these chunky chaps came in a flat cardboard box and were always by Beech's. God how I loved 'em. You?

Selection Boxes - the very essence of Christmas back then. Trays of chocs and sweets, the Dentist's enemy. Which were your faves?

Which Yule supplies came into your house readers? How soon did your parents start stocking up?
