MY HOME-MADE SPACEX SOYUZ 6 & 7 TOYS

Here's my new home-made SpaceX toy.

Soyuz 6 & 7

I based my design on the toy featured on Paul V's brilliant Spacex website.

The bodies are made from deodorant roller tops.

The engines are salt bottle caps finished with cap gun ring caps

The solar panels are segments of an old metal bracelet

The orb heads are plastic golf balls

I've included the docking magnets described on Paul's site. It docks perfectly!

I ran out of red enamel early on so had to use water-based red. Not ideal but it worked OK.

The lettering is my usual sellotape/ letraset trick

Quite tricky, I enjoyed making these Soyuz a lot.

In my haste though I forgot to add two silver radar poles. I've a good reason for adding them now as something dramatic happened when I took this moon shot.

I hope you like these Soyuz.

    1. Thanks a bunch Kevin! Next is a little Molab made from a light bulb. After that I need to re-glue many of the parts of the 2 Soyuz, as I dropped it after the photo shoot! Drat!

  2. Very inventive use of everyday items Woodsy, you could write your next book on the subject! Love the symmetry of the two Soyuzes. Well done!

    1. Thanks a lot Lewis. Yeah, those balls have really come in handy. And I don't even play golf!

  6. Another triumph, Woodsy!

Instantly recognisable, subtly different yet so right.
And if there'd be an Oscar for part sourcing talent, you'd've won it many times over.

    Cheers -- Paul

    1. Thanks a lot Paul! When I'd finished I realised that I'd forgotten the stick antennae. I checked your site for how they look and read that you'd made your own for your actual Tri-ang toy! They look really great! How did you make them?

    2. Sorry for late reply Woodsy.

I made one out of a square-sectioned polystyrene rod obtained from a model shop, carving and sanding where needed. The dish is the kind of cap sold by DIY centres to fit over and hide screw heads. Then used that master example to make a mould and with patience and luck managed to cast two copies in polyurethane. Airbrushed a coat of gloss black and a coat of Alclad and that was that.

      Best -- Paul

    3. That's so skillful what you did Paul. Very impressive and as close to the actual toy antennae as anyone could ever get short of the real thing. Fabulous and inspiring! Thanks.
