'Mother' |
Its a good time for fans of the robot lately, with a lot of film and tv awash with mecha designs. I watched Netflix 'I am Mother' last night and was really impressed, both by the production design and the story overall. A little Terminator crossed with Moon, Chappie and a dose of Kill Command, its a thought provoking film.

Neil Blomkamp's 'Chappie' |
Mecha design seems to be following a similar theme lately, moving away from the humanoid droid to the much more industrial 'Patlabor' anime style robot, to great effect. 'Kill Command' features some excellent combat hardware and the upcoming series three of 'Westworld' leaps from the human face of robotics to the purely functional and frighteningly realistic heavy mechs with its customary flair.

Ro-Busters Lives! Sam Slade, Robo-Hunter, can't be far away.
ReplyDeleteI used to love the big painted colour spreads of Ro-Busters in Starlord, wasn't the same when 2000ad took it over. Sam Slade, I could never take to!
DeleteI thought 'I am Mother' was a superb sci fi movie, Bill. It kept me guessing throughout. Yes, as you mention, positively shades of 'Terminator' about it in places.
ReplyDeleteThe central droid was seriously impressive, especially when it ran!
DeleteAnd with this I have been SUMMONED from the deepths of internet!
ReplyDeleteYep, the Ingram Police mechas are more "european/american" in style and with last few years many of robots from latest movies looks pretty simmilar in style of design.
I as a fan of Japanese mecha designs still love the Battletech (American) and Heavy Gear (Canadian) styles and hate the more "moder" Japanese mecha designs that looks like ultra thin pasta with lots of spar edges jumping from one enemy to another like a frog that overdose drugs
