EAGLE 1 AT SMALLSPACE 8
Some photos I took of Space:1999 original prop, Eagle 1 at last weekend's Smallspace. Here's a few details about it which many of you will no doubt be aware, but for those who don't here we go.
The model is owned of mega modeller, David Sisson, who I believe obtained it in 2002 and found it in a very sorry state. He then had the tough job of restoring it taking care not to ruin its original prop aspect where possible.
The 44" model was designed by Brian Johnson, and built in 1973 by Space Models for the apparent cost of £3000.
It was the largest of the four scales of Eagle models built for the effects shots, and the first of the three 44" Eagles built.
It was the main effects model used in the first season of Space:1999, before being renovated for season two, with new detailed paintwork covering repairs carried out during the course of filming.
Once the series finished filming the model was again, repainted and went on display at the Gerry Anderson 'Space City' exhibition situated on the Golden Mile at Blackpool.
Anderson prop collector Phil Rae acquired it during the early eighties and painted the Medical/Rescue Eagle red stripes on both sides of the pod. (In the series red stripes were only painted temporally on one side only)
When David got the model it was in a neglected state and not in filmed condition with original studio paint finish. So he decided to carry out more extensive repairs ending with the superb result we see on display.
When David spots me taking snaps of his models he always teases me about how many photos I take of Eagle 1, but as I always say, you can never have too many!
