THE MASSACRE OF MANKIND


Hello Woodsy 

I expect the book I'm reading was encouraged by the new War of the Worlds TV series from the UK. 

I was scared by the 1954 movie, read the Classics Illustrated comic, then was drawn to the book back in the 50's. 

A few years ago Osprey publishers of Military histories and reference books came out with their version as The Anglo-Martian War of 1895 which matched the real UK military units of that time with the action of the book. 

It's a fascinating read. 

The present authorised sequel The Massacre of Mankind is such a hard read. I will plough through it eventually but I'm put off by one of the first characters introduced named Eric Eden. To me he's a Dan Dare artist and it breaks my concentration reading it!

    On this topic I will advise the reading of the "Scarlet Traces" comic series ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet_Traces ).

    Now these are REALLY dark stuff!

    Yes. I agree with Scarlet Traces and how hard Massacre was to read. It tried to emulate the journey aspect of the original but really I didn't care. The ending comes almost out of nowhere and I've now half forgotten it. Read the original again for good stuff +Scarlet Traces

      I imagine you can't beat the original HG Wells WoW short story Standby4action. It had everything and Well's language is just terrific. Many of his lines and phrases just stick in the mind forever. Another fave short story of his is The Cone about industrial revolution and revenge. Beautiful and diabolical. It inspired me to have a go to with my effort Goatsucker on my story blog, Gargoyles .... [icon top left]

    I recently got the Osprey book. It's a pretty decent read. I grew up with the Penguin Books paperback of H G Wells' original story with a cover illustration by Harry Willock!

      I think I know that cover Lewis. I studied his short stories for my A level English and of all the books we did that was by far the best. Volpone was bottom!

    After four months have passed since I started reading 'Massacre' and I have finally finished it. I agree with STANDBYFOR ACTION, on reflection I ask myself why did I bother. A terrible book which reflects badly on the Wells Estate that they sanctioned it.

    In London whenever I pass Primrose Hill I think of the War of the Worlds. I have several times past the Queensboro Bridge in Manhattan since reading the reference to it in 'Massacre' with no associations to 'Massacre'. If you haven't read it, don't bother.
