Nice stuff, I visited Illusion Arts in the mid 80's. I didn't meet Albert Whitlock, but I did meet Syd Dutton and William Randy Cook who was animating the demon from The Gate. I also visited Jim Danforth and saw his amazing matte painting from Caravan of Courage. I know at least one digital matte painter; Wayne Harg but the days of paint on glass are well and truly gone!
Fascinating Lewis. Thanks for sharing. I loved the Gate, It was one of the first films I ever bought brand new on VHS. The demon was excellent and the motif of the kid's rocket being used to kill it was really great, innocence triumphs! I don't know Caravan of Courage.
