TEENAGE TOILETRIES OF YESTERYEAR

Reading through a Millers Guide section on TV related toiletries, I noticed the gorgeously tinned vintage Captain Scarlet Talc by the House of Romney and the window boxed Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet soaps from the early 1990's.

This got me thinking about the toiletries I myself used as a kid.

I remember Matey bubble bath in the bathroom and a fine bubbley bath it made too. The bottle looked like a Sailor with a white cap.

Avon catalogues were popular in our house and Mum ordered tons of stuff. I know that shipments of Avon glass after shave bottles arrived regularly for my older Brothers. Bottles shaped like Model T Fords and Porsche Carerras for a racey night out in Preston!

I recall having a sneaky palmful of my Dad's Old Spice and Brut resulting in that Home Alone Kevin mirror scream! Boy were those after shaves not meant for young spotty faces!

My first real Cologne was Eau Sauvage, which I sprayed on as a teenager in the hope that members of the opposite sex would swoon at my feet! They didn't but I smelt nice. Sort of lemony!

What toiletries do you remember?

  1. Hairspray brands I recall were Cossack and Falcon, then when I hit 16 every girls earlobe I chewed on during heavy snogging tasted of Boots extra strong hairspray (Tall in a red/white can). Also my mum was an Avon rep so we had all manner of toiletries, the green model-T rings a bell!- Mark J Southcoast Base

You mean to say you didn't find them bracing?

The only toiletrie I recall with any fondness was an Avon white plastic bottle of bubble bath shaped as a whale. The tail unscrewed as the bottle top. It was great for recreating Moby Dick at bath time.

    2. ha ha, yep, bracing is a good word for them Terran. I was a fan of Moby Dick too. I remember a startling film with Gregory Peck I saw as a kid. The white whale and Ahab alone at sea was fabulous.

  3. Who could forget Hai Karate, Woodsy.
Sadly, for me at least, it never worked quite like it did the adverts :(

  4. Dinosaur shampoo bottles from Avon.I remember a T Rex and a Brontosaur. There might have been a Triceratops too. There was soap that came out of a can called Crazy Foam. The can had a face like a clown(Later they had Superheroes like Batman and Spiderman)and the soap would come out of the mouth(!)I had a stringent for my face called Sea Breeze that I think is still sporadically available today. As for cologne,I wore Drakkar Noir and Photo by Karl Lagerfeld in my twenties and the ladies liked it.Drakkar is still around but it now seems a little too strong for my present tastes.
