MARX DALEKS TAKE OVER THE BBC TOY SHOP DURING BBC INTERLUDE 1960's

Today I mentioned in a comment that Marx toy Daleks had allegedly appeared in Dr. Who episodes and the Invasion movie as described here in DenValdron's article https://www.thedoctorwhoforum.com/uncategorized/the-quirks-of-quarks-another-of-doctor-whos-also-ran-monsters/

I've not been able to locate any of the 'toy dalek' footage mentioned by DenValdron but ..... I have bumped into this fascinating clip of toys on the BBC including ....... Marx Daleks!

It was posted on You Tube in 2007 by Natalief2018.

I think it was called Toy Fair on the BBC and aired in the 1960's. Its described as an interlude. I know that means a break but how was it used at the time?

Anyways, its slightly demented and off-kilter and I love it!

What do you think?

  1. I loved it when I posted it on my blog over 3 years back, having first seen it on either the Dalekmania video or Doctor Who Night in 1999. Great wee clip. Shame the gun and sucker arm are reversed.

    1. It is Kid. Stuffed with toys. I've been trying to work out what the sparts car and driver are at the start. Ken? I'll have to look closer. The angles they took filming are really interesting and automatically make the clip darker and more interesting. There are some dates mentioned below the thing on You Tube as to when it was aired in the 90's. I certainly didn't see it. Have you seen Marx Daleks in the Dr. Who show itself Kid?

    2. Yeah, they were used in at least one episode, in long-shot crowd scenes of Daleks. I may be misremembering this next bit, but I have the impression that the Herts Plastic Moulder Daleks may also have been used at some time.

  2. Definately not Ken. The Sports Car and Driver are all in one I would say now. The train looks like Triang's Big Big Train. Is that right? The music's straight out of Hammer! ha ha

  3. The taxi at the beginning is probably like the one seen here:

The soundtrack noise is the 'diesel' sound of the FX4 with just one battery.

I'm surprised that the BBC made an interlude as late as this one seems to have be. The one's in the 50's were to fill 5 or more minutes between shows as there was only one studio in use and the sets had to be changed between shows. Since the BBC showed no commercials there would have been dead air otherwise.

  4. Marx Daleks featured in "Evil of the Daleks" with Patrick Troughton in 1967 and "Day of the Daleks" with Jon Pertwee in 1972. In both cases they appear in the final episodes, where they are used in miniature effects sequences showing Daleks being destroyed in large numbers.

  5. The Herts plastic daleks appeared on a dalek "production line" in a Patrick Troughton episode (I think the episode itself is lost). I remember the Marx daleks in 2 scenes (possibly both Troughton), once in a "crowd scene" when they are shown being revived from being frozen, and another (possibly a different story) where they are zipping along in front of a large static Emperor dalek. The names of the stories escape me, though.

    1. Thanks Andy. There are some episode names mentioned in the article highlighted in my post. I don't know these and as yet I've failed to find any stills or footage of these toy daleks.

  6. The Herts Daleks appear, as Andy B has said, on a factory like prduction line, in the first Troughton story, "Power of the Daleks" from 1966. Although some, or mabe it's all, of the episodes are lost, the shot of these Daleks still exists, for some reason that I can't remember.

  7. I think my info comes from the DVDs of these Dr who stories and/or the special features on these, or other, BBC Dalek story discs, but check YouTube as well.
