SCI-FI FILMS I ONLY HALF-REMEMBER OR NOT AT ALL

There are loads of Sci-Fi flicks I've never seen. Some I've seen the first half hour of too before I fell asleep in the Moonbase guard tower chair.

Ruffling my retroes I can think of a few right now:

There's one with James Spader where he's an astro-paleontologist. He's called in by NASA i think to look over something mighty peculiar in a large cave. That's all I recall. Spader is an odd leading man. Geeky and awkward. I did enjoy his roles in Wolf and Crash though. No idea what this film is called.

There's a flick called Space Mine or Alien Mine too. It stars Sonny Corleone himself, James Caan, again a very odd choice for the lead in a Sci-Fi film I feel. I think he befriends an alien. Anyone know it?

Flight of the Navigator. Now I must have seen this. Its famous. But I can't recall a thing except a poster I've seen showing a kid flying sat down in a glass ball. What's it about?

Mac and me. I get this mixed up with Marley and me. I think Mac is another nice alien like ET. Definately never seen it.

There's a flick about a spaceman who lands back in time only to have to fight dragons. The lead is a hunky kind of guy who's vaguely familiar. He helps the viking-like locals invent weapons. No idea what its called and I did fall asleep.

Time Cop. or is it Alien Cop? I remember seeing this in video rental stores back in the VHS years but never got it out. There's a mean looking fanged cop on the cover I think, but that might be another film called Wolf Cop!

Spaceballs. Not seen this. What? You've never seen Spaceballs? No. Recommended by Terranova47 among many others. There's a neat prop post coming up about this soon too.

That's it for now. There'll be more. Do you know any of them? Are there films you half-remember but not the titles readers?

  1. James Spader one is Stargate. James Caan - no idea! Flight of the Navigator is a Disney one which used (at the time) cutting edge cgi graphics to portray a liquid metal morphing spaceship that hooks up with a kid on earth (The navigator) as he apparently has star charts in his head. Looks good, but saturday afternoon stuff. Spaceman going back to fight dragons is 'Outlander' not to be confused with the rececent series, starring Jim Cavziel. Good watch, very gory. Time Cop is the Muscles from Brussels sci fi outing - Jean Claude Van Damme - as a time travel vehicle is designed to run on tracks (into a lab wall if it doesnt work!) into the past to apprehend criminals in time. Not great. As far as Alien Cop, you may be thinking of 'Alien Nation' from back in 88, where naturalised aliens are drafted in to fight crime in earth cities. 'Spaceballs' is Mel Brooks Star Wars pastiche with Pizza the Hutt, Dark Helmet and more, hilarious!

  2. I think it's Enemy Mine and it starred Dennis Quaid but I could be wrong in thinking it's originally an Outer Limits story and that could've been James Caan??( I've never seen all the Outer Limits)- Mark J Southcoast Base

  3. Mac and Me is bad, really bad. Might be entertaining for a youngster in the single digits age.

I'd agree with Outlander as that is essentially Beowulf in space made about 10 years ago. Going back further though, we could suspect it being Unidentified Flying Oddball. This is from1979 and was released in the U.K. as The Spaceman And King Arthur (rerelease in the US as A Spaceman In King Arthur's Court. It is a Disney movie and involves lasers, a time traveling space shuttle, an android duplicate and magic and science. Not a bad movie for yet another reselling of A Connecticut Yanke in King Arthur's Court.

  5. Mark - yes, of course, Enemy Mine. A great film all round. 'Alien Hunter'? New one on me! Supernova is rubbish, an alien/terminator hybrid involving an alien artefact that turns one of the crew into an unstoppable adversary. Pick fluff out of your navel for more visual safisfaction.

For a good hours casual viewing, 'Kill Command' is on Netflix and a really good low budget scifi thriller with some extremely well realised armoured robots.

  7. Flight of the Navigator is a Disney-fied adaptation of an SF short story about humans having a power to propel space ships, the components of which are various aliens. A small boy was substituted for the original adult. I don't remember much about the story, (nor can I remember the name of the short story), which probably says much.
