ZYTHON AND HIS ROBED FRIENDS

I noticed that Arto's old and uber-cool Museum display of Star Maidens and the Zero-X also contained a Zython.

He's the green headed figure at far right stood in front of the two Star Maidens.

Zython was released by Mattel as part of their 1975 Space 1999 figure range.

Its a very uncommon action figure with a distinctive trident weapon and insignia. Did he appear in the TV show?

The figure was re-issued as Nocton by Cipsa of Mexico pictured below.

Zython would have sat well with my own childhood Mattel aliens ten years earlier in the mid-Sixties. Callisto and Scorpio would have welcomed him, although neither looked as noble with that regal cape.

There have been other caped toy aliens though.

The Keeper by Mego

and the similarly robed Martian Chronicles by Larami

But perhaps my favourite robed figure  and like all those pictured, something I don't have,

Coth from the Tomland Star Raiders range.

Have you any robed aliens?

  1. No.. no... no... you've gone and done it again, Woodsy! Apart from The Keeper, the others are also new to me. I did wonder who the figure was in Arto's fantastic museum display. Reminded me a little of Tharg from 2000AD comic. Excellent post :)

    1. Tharg, yes, I see what you mean Tone! Thanks for the thumbs up. It was fun.

  2. No hooded aliens here but I do like how The Keeper and The Martian have essentially the same robe pattern. Just one with a laid down collar. Hard to tell if the Martian's has the same sweeping sleeve cuts that the Keeper has in the pics though. But further research over at the Mego Museum reveals Laramie did in fact base the clothing on the Keepers Robe.

    1. Super follow-up Lance. I love it when a plan comes together! Never seen any of these toys n the flesh. Just books and virtual.

  3. Could be wrong, but don't think Zython appeared in Space 1999 at all, unless he showed up in some obscure second series episode.
Only had the Paul Morrow figure from this range myself (don't remember why).
    Mish.

    1. Thanks Mish. I never saw a single episode so I'll take it from you. Wonder how they came up with him as a toy?
