FAB WORLDS OF THE NATIONAL SPACE CENTRE

Taking a break from the Anderson related items at Fab Worlds for a moment, here are a few photos of some of the National Space Centre’s own exhibits.

This is an EVA suit worn by Matt Damon during the filming of Ridley Scott’s sci-fi survival movie, ‘The Martian’.  It’s based on the Extra Vehicular Activity suits used on the International Space Station.

Costume designer Janty Yates worked with NASA engineers and the film’s art department to approve the final design. Manufactured circa 2015 by FBFX.

This Soyus 7K OK (A) spacecraft, suspended from the ceiling is what you see when you first enter the N.S.C.

It’s quite impressive and is only one of three known Soyus spacecraft in the West. There is one at a Theme Park in France and the other is in the United States at the Smithsonian Institution.

There are two ballistic missiles on display:  The British Blue Streak and the U.S. Air Force PGM-17 Thor.

The Centre’s restaurant in situated beneath both the rockets nozzles, and  at various times throughout the day there’s an ignition simulation using dry ice, much to the enjoyment of visiting youngsters who gather underneath the vapour.

There are plenty of other exhibits and educational displays, including a Lunar Module cabin simulator were you can attempt to land on the Moon, the ‘fulldome’ planetarium, and this Gemini capsule.

For outer space fans well worth a visit.

  1. Brilliant shots Scoop. Looks like you had a grand weekend all round. My Missus took me to the Space Centre for my 50th birthday and it was great. I loved the tower of rockets, going up in the lift and seeing the full length of the Blue John. I lreally like the Gemini pictures youve taken. It looks just like a large scale version of the Apollo Moon Exploring capsule with its wheels front and back! Amazing what humans are capable of. Tin cans that reach space.

    3. Thanks Woodsy, yes its certainly a great place to visit. Obviously, with all the Anderson stuff going on there too, I didn't a chance to enjoy all the NSC's exhibits, but it was a perfect venue for it. It reminded me a little of the Anderson Cosford events that took place a few years ago at the RAF Museum.
