I loved skin divers, scuba divers and frogmen when I was a young spelunker.
I still do. Somehow they symbolise a more innocent, more exciting age. Its probably a lot to do with James Bond and Thunderball!
There were an awful lot of frogmen flapping around in the Sixties and pictures of them were everywhere. There were lots of toys too!
I was taken with this pair of frogmen I saw on Etsy so I kept the picture. They are labelled as skin divers but technically I suppose they're frogmen.
These industrious frogmen, with wire-cutters and tools, were commonplace when I was a kid turning up loose in display boxes, bubble cards and baggies and even 007 board games.
I think the originals were by Lone Star. These skin divers are knockoffs by the looks of it.
Did you have any?
I had a yellow one that dived and surfaced as a result of chemical reactions going on between tablets that you put in his air tank!
ReplyDeleteYeah, I've read about those chemo divers but don't remember them Kev. Was the chemical a tablet like an alka seltzer?
DeleteI think so but it must've been smaller to fit in his tank. I have vague recollections that two different ones went in?
DeleteI had the Lone Star divers and the Chariot mini submarine too, which was the predecessor of the X-class midget submarines( my grandfather had a hand in building them during the war!)- Mark J Southcoast Base
