KISSING THE CORONA: NASA'S NEW SUN PROBE

Just picking up on NASA's new mission to graze the sun.

The delayed Parker Solar Probe will launch tomorrow [not today].

The fastest man-made object in history, the rocket will launch from Cape Canaveral and send its sun probe into the solar atmosphere.

Bringing Science Fiction to life, this sun mission reminds me of Thunderbirds, Project SWORD, Doppelganger and the buzz of all those other fabulous visions we grew up with.

Here comes the Sun!

What do you think readers?

  1. I'm sure its just a coincidence, but the name "Parker" and that fact that the probe is going to the Sun is reminiscent of Thunderbirds and the "Sun Probe" episode.

    1. I don't recall the details of the episode Bill. Do they manage to launch their Sun Probe?

    2. It was the story where Tin Tin went with Alan and Scott in TB3 to try and save three "Solarnauts" in their malfunctioning rocket on a collision course with the Sun.

  2. When I was studying physics (early 80's), they did not know why the solar atmosphere was much hotter than the solar surface. Interesting that they still don't know and that is something this probe will investigate.

    1. Fascinating Kevin. I'm amazed the Parker Probe will be able to withstand the temperatures. How have they done that?

    2. I think a whacking great carbon fibre heat shield. How they protect the electronics from a torrent of charged particles and a stonking great magnetic field I don't know!

  3. I think Parker was the name of the scientist who first discovered the solar atmosphere.

  4. What good will it do NASA, sending a giant pen to the Sun?
Surely the ink will dry up?!
    Mish.
