SHOCKING COPIES: MONSTROUS COVERS 1

Like vintage toys, I've really enjoyed being a horror book and comic collector for many years.

Now I like to spot online cover art lifted from one to the other.

The gorgeously garish Galaxia 2001 from Spain is a treasure trove of lifted monsters.

In this one we see a huge hairy hominid rampaging through a city and ..

.. looks a lot like one of the giants in War of the Gargantuas would you agree? [a film I've never seen]

This cover depicts a snake-like gill creature ....

almost certainly inspired by Eerie's classic mer-monster.

This lolloping space monster painted by Prieto Muriana is a copy of ....

Frank Frazetta's monstrous menaces from Creepy. Its the middle figure that's been copied with the club simply left out!

On the left Galaxia cover here the sword and sandals art is an amended version of ...

Frazetta's well-known Chessmen of Mars book cover. Even the animal creature is in a similar position!

This final crab giant cover recalls another image but I just can't think what. Can you?

  1. When I think of giant crabs,I think of Guy N. Smith's books.Origin of the Crabs maybe?Or perhaps Mysterious Island?

    1. Nice one Brian. I'll check out Mysterious Island. That'll be older.

  2. Isn't there a low budget horror film, something like "Attack of the Crab Monsters" -think there may be a connection to this artwork.

  3. You've highlighted some fiendish similarities, Woodsy. I never tire of looking at vintage monster, horror and sci fi, comic and paperback cover art. Always great to see it here on Moonbase, Woodsy! :)
