Ranalcus and Street 4WD

Reader Ranalcus recently described to me a hobby which he's involved in. Its called Street Mini 4WD, in which model cars are guided around a track with a stick.

*

Ranalcus takes up the story:

The "hockey stick" was used in 1988 Dash! Yonkuro, that I am helping to translate at

I work there as "technical information" explaining what each part is for etc.

Here is the Streetmini4wd page created by Italian racers (in English and

in Japanese)

*

I met them this year and raced them a

bit. These are "the cheapest and easiest to

start" as you don't need a circuit or hi-performance parts.

*

There are few types of races, mostly Technical and Speed, semi-speed and

semi-technical. Most of regions/countrys have their own variations of

rules/builds as Malesians (chassis Super 1 used from 95-99 as it is

"bulletproof" and good for long jumps) built completely different to the

Americans (simpler version of Japanese specification with Super 2 and

VS chassis that are light/easy to remodel) or Italians (monobara -

kits that remodeled for hi-speed line changes)

*

Monobara - they are used with hi-speed "overpass" line changers (x

shaped parts of track that mix the lines of track)

*

Malaysia "loose jaw/lantern" - the cage around the model is instaled

on springs/hinge so during landing it "hits like hammer" (brass

weights) to prevent rebound of the car

*

Flat build - asymetrical front rollers, depending on which side turns

are hi-speed ones, ofen with handmade ultra large thin tires. Ultra

lite and ultra fast, but delicate as an egg

*

Japan Cup specification - ultra thin tires, 1mm clearance, build for

semi- (mixed speed/technical), small works of art

*

Street - sponge tires (made often from sponge handelbars for bikes),

stock motor and 5:1 gear ratio so you can run NEXT to it, only 4

rollers instead of 6, rigid and simple construction often with

handmade parts as it is "legal" to use non-tamiya parts. You can easly

remodel "box stock" kit to use in those races.
