Im always changing tack, although I do have a multitude of collecting strands. When one strand come to an end, or reaches the unobtainable point, ill pick up something else. Ive almost reached the point where all the things I had or wanted as a child have been rediscovered or replaced, which is satisfying as I need to have complete sets of anything to feel content. Ill always collect something though. At the moment its filling in little gaps in my main collections such as Apollo Moon Exploring, Matt Mason or Micronauts.
Quite a few of my collector friends are what I call serial collectors, having completed their quantitative or intellectual mission on some branch of collecting, then selling their collection to start anew. The latest fad has seen many veteran toy collectors to turn their sights to watches.
I consider myself fortunate not having this urge to make a drastic change. Instead, during the past 15 years I have seen my collecting interests enriched by new territories close to those original interests - much of it thanks to the Moonbase Central Blog that has provided a constant supply of new and interesting discoveries to go after.
The circles are small here so basically it is the same hunting grounds for all kinds of collectibles, plus the specialized circle of collectors for that particular branch of collecting.

A few times > started with Warhammer 40 000 Orks army and fantasy book > stoped to play Warhammer as the price of having give army was too much for me > changed the Warhammer for Gundam model kits and anime figures (some are hmmm... low on "cloth covering the body") > added 1/24, 1/32 car model kits and SF model kits (like space ships from Gradius, R-type etc.) > started to collect 80's and 90's model kits and toys (some use electrics/electronics) >buying some Trading Card Games (from dead lines that are not know in EU/USA) from time to time (mostly for art etc.)
I started out with collecting Hot Wheels and model kits. Over time the modes went away due to breakage and shifting focus. My Hot Wheels from my youth are still around though, probably close to 99% of what I had as a kid. My next 'binge' was GI Joe which actually as I think about it, has been with me all my life. My first Joe was the talking pilot (my dad flew in the early 50's Navy) and that Joe along with my first land adventurer and Atomic Man are still with me. I went through a Dinky phase but down here they were rather sparse to come by. Then I discovered anime in 1980 and collected heavily of videos, thanks to Nippon Daido's rental of tv shows!, and quite a bit of toys. At this time I also grabbed the GI Joe Real American Hero toys as they came out. One of the benefits of working in the toy dept for Target lol.
Nowadays my focus is back on the original GI Joes, space themed toys and Lego. Lego is addicting and I suspect 25% of my blood is plastic haha.
I had a table a couple of times at the conventions and managed to sell some things off but tended to use the money to buy something new. No profits for me lol. Same with the Joes only I did more trading than sales and while I came home with less than I left with, I often had larger things. Off in storage are 2 1/6 scale Stuart tanks, a 1/6 Sherman tank made of resin (way heavy) and way too many 5 star jeeps. Vehicles are essential but damn they take up so much room.

That's some career in collecting Lance. Have you ever stood at a toy fair with some of your stuff?
