Wernher Von Braun's 1955 Space Suit with Arms

I was fascinated by this old NASA film from 1955 on You Tube.

Wernher Von Braun explains how it should be done. Space travel that is.

The models he uses for this are quite wonderful. Have a look.

One of the models is this beautiful chunky teardrop space suit with thin arms.

It brought to mind Kenner's Star Wars CAP-2 some 22 years later.

and maybe their FX-7 too

There may even be a toy even more similar to Von Braun's space suit.

What do you think?

  1. Those look a bit like kits from Maschinen Krieger ZbV 3000 (Ma.K)

    1. They look great Ran. Chunky suits. Almost Steampunk. How do they come up with the names like Kangaroo!

    2. It is more like "Dieselpunk" (Steampunk is "victorian era", Dieselpunk is "WWII era)
The names can be weird, like thise S.A.F.S. Snowman

    3. Ah! Dieselpunk! Yes, I've heard of that. So I suppose the Hydra in Captain America are Dieselpunk styled vehicles? I love that wooden model. It could be Von Braun's model with legs! So what came after Dieselpunk?

    4. Not sure if anything, as the Dieselpunk is "young", and all other eras are too "new"genre mu
But 80's "punk" have "Synthwave", "Retrowave" as music genre

    5. Music too eh Ran! You know your modern stuff. I had too look up Deiselpunk [DP] because I love labels like that and the boundaries between them. I was amazed to see Blade Runner in the films with DP elements. Dark City too, which blog contributor Lewis P. Morley worked on the props for. It seems that Atompunk may follow DP taking in the post war atomic age and the cold war. Fascinating stuff.

    6. I would understand Dark City as a Dieselpunk, but Blade Runner is Cyberpunk (2020+ era)

Also there is new Polish game in the making - Frostpunk, it is a Steampunk era RTS/City builder game during the "endless winter".
