Hi Woodsy
Do any of our readers have back issues of Starburst magazine?
The reason I ask is I've been watching a lot of Red Dwarf and I swear that Ace Rimmer's space craft was originally supposed to be in the unproduced Dan Dare TV series that Starburst ran a feature on back in the early 80's.
As an additional I think Colin Welland was involved, straight from Kinvig too but that's where the old grey matter gives out!!

I think it is just that the ship in the photo is similar to the one built by Martin Bower, which may well have been for a tv show. There are pictures of it online if you search under Dan Dare and Martin Bower.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kev i'll check it out! - Mark J
DeleteHi all.
DeleteAce Rimmer's Dimension Jump Ship was designed and built by Alan 'Rocky' Marshall, who was a Design Assistant at the BBC's Visual Effects Department.
It was built specifically for the Red Dwarf episode 'Dimension Jump' and not for the un-produced Dan Dare TV series.
Love the website and the blog, by the way, Woody.
Keep it up!

ReplyDeletethat is PERFECT diorama
And that is how you can see the profesional level, it simply is lots of good taste, hard work and dedication.
Starburst magazines are some older "official" magazines? Or some sort of "fanzines" (magazines made by fans for fans)?
Hi Ranalcus, Starburst is I think the UK's longest running Scifi mag originally produced by Marvel!- Mark J
DeleteThank you for the explanation
DeleteThis must have been the early 80's Dan Dare series that is being referred to - there's a fair amount online regarding this, such as the airbrushed environment artwork and character designs.
ReplyDeleteI was very briefly involved in the early 90's attempt, where the ships were all CG - I have a copy of the pilot episode on VHS somewhere, before it was canned.
Fascinating Ravi. What was it like being involved in the 90's attempt?
