I think I did, or rather my parents thought it would be a good thing- although soon found that with the great variety of childrens' paperbacks available in the 1960s (eg. Armada and Puffin), it was possible to spend the same amount in local shops and get a greater variety of books. I think you had to buy at least 4 books from them a year.
I know what you mean Andy. I joined a book club in the 80's to get books on birds. It seemed like a good idea until I had to buy one at full price every month! Oddly enough I have the book on offer in the TV21 ad, the Pageant of History. Good for history homework when I was kid!
