I'm having a bit of a Lego reneaissance lately. Having given up trying to collect the entire line of toys some years ago, due to skyrocketting costs, I have now decided to just focus on the most interesting part - the Masks.
When the line emerged back in 2000, it was a range of six simple figures with removeable headgear. Lego's masterstroke was to release inexpensive bags of randomly assorted alternate masks with rare colours inside. This meant that demand for the less common pieces increased and collectors ensured the continuance of the line. 16 years later, the line finally ground to a halt, after spawning annual releases and several changes in style.
The current total of available masks including misprints and rarerities must be in the low hundreds and it was only after the line was finally discontinued along with its successors, Glatorian and Hero Factory, that I was able to consider completing the collection.
Discounting the many colour variations, and focussing on simply the main designs, I am about 30 pieces away from a reasonably definitive collection.

DeleteThere's a strange voodo-esque feel to those masks Bill! Maybe even a hint of Colourforms Outer Space Men. I do like them and can see how collecting them could be addictive!
