Did You Make Noises When You Were a Kid?

Making sounds was a big deal when we were kids.

In fact making as much noise as possible was a serious business!

Some of those sounds were pretty unique to childhood.

One such noise was blowing raspberries. I really enjoyed a good long razzer. I'm now enjoying blowing them at my Moonbase Grandson, who loves to blow them back at me! ha ha.

Another sound of the sixties was creating raspy notes using a comb and a piece of tracing paper. Now I'm not entirely sure how this worked and certainly never mastered it. Can anyone explain how it was done?

I was however good at generating a ringing sound. It came from rubbing a wet finger round and round a glass rim as fast as possible. Something to do with resonance I imagine. It was a neat sound to produce at family gatherings that's for sure!

The mouth pop was another common single-note melody emitted by my peers in the playground. Once again this was another tootle that eluded me for some reason. I could never muster a decent bang from my mush like the other kids. It was simple enough, stick your finger in your mouth, hook the inner cheek and drag your finger across it and then out sort of fast. Pop!

Tapping was my thing. I adored a good finger tap across a hard surface. I still do and often find myself morse-ing a tune on a kitchen counter. One of my fave rhythms was a drum solo by rock pro Cozy Powell from the Seventies. I forget the name of the single but I had it. The record label had a tall yacht pictured on it. I even mastered the solo using two hands and I'm pretty sure I could have a good go on a set of proper drums! ha ha

Tapping's easy but blowing into an acorn cup isn't. My Missus can do it really well and given the chance can pipe a high note from a husk in any park. Can you acorn whistle?

Speaking of whistling [that wouldn't work in reverse, whistling of speaking!] I couldn't. I just couldn't blow a melody for toffee. No chance and I still can't. The combination of lip pursing, tongue movement and air jetting was and is beyond my facial skills. How I'd love to whistle Singin' in the Rain walking Blue in the fields!

Enough of the hard stuff though, what about something I'm a ninja at! Yep, I'm a black belt at clicking my fingers. For some reason I'm able to produce a huge slap when I click and was able to as a kid. 

Early on I combined it with a slick finale of pointing my index finger too. The whole wallop and point happened in a second and still I often finger slap for fun. For extra bang I click both hands at once but my right is infinitely louder. Somewhere this X-men-like skill would be useful but I'm not sure where. If I was an X-Man I think I'd be called Click!
