I had fun the other day doing something I hadn't done for 50 years I don't think.
I had to keep a kid entertained for half an hour and there just happened to be some plain paper and a box of crayons to hand.
We each got a sheet and a bundle of crayons and I remembered in the distant past putting layers of different coloured crayon on top of each other.
So this is what we did. First yellow, then red, then green, then a final topping of black.
We then got a compass each and I held my breath. Would it do what I hoped it would.
We wrote our names and as if by magic the compass point went straight through the black top to reveal the lighter layers beneath. Our names appeared in yellow, red and mixtures of the two. We progressed to drawing houses, stars and so on!
It worked like a dream and suddenly I was 7 again!
Did you do this readers?
Oh this brings back memories Woodsy! Yes we did, fireworks in a night sky. All you had to do was to scrape those colours free from under the black layer of crayon. I recall using a metallic tip of a quill which created double streaks when pressed hard enough. Plus can still remember the smell of the pitch-black, waxy surface.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea to use a quill nib Arto! wax calligraphy! And fireworls in the night sky! Of course! It was such a simple but beautiful type of kids art. I imagine somewhere a firm tried to box it up and brand it! Wax Art or something. But everything you needed was all in the house or at school! Happy waxy days. And yes, that small! Ummmmm.
Deletesmall? I meant smell!Ummmmmmm!
