When I was a kid in the Sixties I got up very early on Christmas morning.
Probably like most of you I got up around 5am!
My two older brothers got up at the same time and we all went downstairs together. Mum and Dad were still in bed. My two sisters may have lived at home too but I can't recall if they got up as well for some reason.
Mum and Dad will have been putting in the hours getting everything ready for five of us on Christmas Eve night. That's a lot of kids to get prezzies ready for!
We'd descend like a mad herd of reindeer into the lounge where the tree was glowing like a city and gifts were waiting in twinkling piles as if by magic.
To make things easier for us we each had a chair with our presents laid out on them. Being the baby of the family I got a whole settee! I've got a feeling now that that constitutes as being spoilt rotten!
Later on in the early Seventies when I grew older and stared at the bumfluff on my teenage chin my older Brother had to get me up on Christmas morning. It was still early but I wasn't leading the charge of the night brigade anymore.
By 13 my surging testosterone kept me comatose most mornings until I'd drunk a pint of Tizer. My brothers may not have even been to bed on Christmas Eve and come and got me from my pit after clubbing all night with the other elves.
By 1977 family Christmases were all over for us but I remember with great fondness those early Xmas mornings when I ran downstairs at 5am desperate for a Captain Lazer and a Moon Prospector!
When did you get up at Christmas when you were little readers? What was it like?
....a pint of Tizer. Back then Tizer was at it's height of being a pure, delicious chemical concoction, artificial colour, taste, everything. Now that the new owners claim to have returned it to it's original, natural recipe I would dare you to drink a pint now!
ReplyDeleteha ha! I'm not sure I could now Terra! Kids seem able to sup super human amounts of pop! I wonder if the new Tizer will be a hit with today's thirsty youth. It will take a lot to prize their beloved Monster energy drink cans from them!
DeleteMy brother and me used to wait until our parents had gone to bed, had time to fall asleep, and then it was tippy-toe downstairs time for the pair of us. I remember my brother getting a Pedigree Tommy Gunn action figure in 1966 and taking it upstairs when we returned to our shared room. He then fell asleep, clutching Tommy like a teddy bear. Can't remember what I got for Christmas that year, but I've never forgotten Tommy Gunn.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great memory Kid. I bet a lot of little 'uns tip-toed downstairs when their parents were asleep. I bet they still do. I'm pretty sure I had a Tommy Gunn too - Mum got it from Zodiac Toys. I just don't remember anything else about it! Think I need some hypnosis!
