Scare yourself witless this pre-Ween with the superbly sinister The Stone Tape.
This TV play is full of excellent acting, very little music but lots of ambient noise and a storyline meshing high-tech electronics with a hair-raising haunting.
Shown in UK TV in 1972 and written by the immensely talented Nigel Kneale, it contains arguably the most spine-tingling scene in TV horror, known to fans affectionately as 'the scream'.
So, put your feet up, grab a beer, turn off the lights and play, courtesy of You Tube...

ReplyDeleteWatched it again on Youtube, and was a little disappointed, but perhaps this is because it impressed me so much the first time around! I still think Quatermass and the Pit (TV version) is the best thing in this genre.
I know what you mean Andy. Seventoes TV plays are unique and take some re-tuning to get into largely because they relied on strong acting and dialogue with hard;y any music. I've just watched another old series calledDead of Night from 1972, which are just the same and very unsettling. I agree Quatermass and the Pit was a TV classic. I enjoyed The Stone Tape so much because I love electronics in old Seventies ghost plays and the fact that it was in colour.
