space robot target cork gun game mystery card art

Been staring at this card art and thinking it looks sort of familiar but I just can't put my finger on it!

Does anyone recognise the artwork?

  1. I'm thinking it's based on Japanese Manga Gatchaman(known as Battle of the Planets in The States)

    1. Good one Brian. Alas, I can't say as I don't know Battle of the Planets is like really apart from the Popy die-cast toys.

  2. Or maybe Battleship Yamato(Star Blazers)?

  3. Someone has mentioned Space Ace. Could that be it?

  4. I think the real source is just that it is so generic that it makes our brain make connections that aren't there. That style of helmet is all over the sci fi universe. It doesn't remind me of BotP or Starblazers at all. In fact the first thing that popped into my brain when seeing the artwork was the animated Captain Future series. Helmet is vaguely the same butt hat's part of it being so generic. I can say it is not CF after viewing the opening again. Looking again at the artwork, the larger figure's pose reminds me of a jumping pose, like hurdles or long jump and now I'm wondering if it wasn't just repurposed artwork with spacesuit and gun laid on top of.

As for Space Ace, the only thing that invokes Space Ace is the font with kind of a shadow effect and color of the SPACE ROBOT wording. That's similar to the Space Ace signage on the cabinet but mostly because it is a generic space style font on the package, not the arcade cabinet. Also in the game and all promotional materials, Space Ace is in a more golden and black pairing of colors.

    1. Thanks for that insightful comment Lance. Its the sort of detail I love on Moonbase. I personally have never seen Space Ace or Captain Future and have a distinct lack of Manga and Anime experience. Somehow it passed me by. you and me talked space ace over two years ago too! http://projectswordtoys.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/don-bluths-space-ace-toys.html
