I know I'm a Philistine Scoop but why is it Breakaway Day? I never watched Space 1999 so it remains a bit of a mystery to me I'm afraid. Don't know what I was doing instead back then though instead!
Breakaway is the title of the first episode of Space 1999. In the episode a build up of magnetic energy at a Nuclear waste dump on the moon causes a massive explosion which knocks the Moon from its orbit, breaking away from the Earth. This happens on September 13th 1999. Space 1999 fans like to mark the day.
Coincidently it's also Barbara Bain's birthday too, so many happy returns Doctor Russell.
