young samson, mighty mightor and he-man

Having been off ill recently I watched a few old Sixties cartoons on You Tube to cheer myself up.

Stuff I loved as a kid like Frankenstein Junior, Shazzan, Marine Boy and Heckle and Jeckle.

There were some cartoons that I'm aware of now [ I collected them as KIDS brand videos in the Nineties] but not sure at all if I watched them as a kid: Herculoids, Young Samson and the one I may have watched, Space Ghost.

Giving these a whirl I noticed a thread emerging, the similarity with He-Man!

To see what I mean have a look at the opening of Young Samson on You Tube. Watch the transformation into the muscled Young Samson and his lion. He-Man and Battle cat or what!

And as for the famous 'I have the Power' sword raising check out Might Mightors' similar move arounfdthe 1.07 minute mark here

As a reminder what the He-Man intro was like have a gander on You Tube too

Are there any links between these cartoons?

Did you watch them as a kid?

  1. I'm sure the minds behind He -Man and Masters of the Universe were in some way influenced by these earlier cartoons, but I don't know that for a fact. Now, all these others;Herculoids,Young Samson,Moby Dick,Mightor and Space Ghost are all products of the glorious godfathers of Saturday morning,Hannah-Barbera.In the late 60's to the mid 70's, this was the format that dominated the Saturday morning cartoon format. They were action packed and even a little sinister and violent,a fact that parents of the era were painfully aware of.I'll add 3 more for you to look into;Johnny Quest,Dino Boy in the Lost Valley, and Valley of the Dinosaurs.

    1. Yes, Hanna Barbara was exported to Britain too and young Brits like me lapped it all up in the Sixties on Saturday mornings too! They were just the best and I can't think of a single cartoon I didn't like. I know the names of most of them but not sure if I saw them all. Others I loved included Spider-Man, Deputy Dawg, Heckle and Jeckle, Marine Boy, Astro Nut, Rocket Robin, Top Cat and Scooby Doo.

  2. After some thought, I do know of a link between these cartoons.I've been watching a new tv comedy called "Son of Zorn".The main character(Zorn) is an animated character who looks much like He Man,and the show is about him dealing with his ex-wife and son who are human characters living an everyday suburban life.Zorn is a bit of a jerk, and very out of touch with modern life. The show is,IMHO,funny in a dysfunctional, slightly disturbing way.The opening scene showing the title of the show is very reminiscent of those Hanna-Barbera cartoons, showing Zorn in a triumphant stance amid a prehistoric looking background.
