UFO MISSILE TANK

The UFO Missile tank is one of those pieces of unlicensed Ufo merchandise that has very limited appeal as the box artwork is the only thing that has any remote relevance to the TV series, although that doesn't stop some dealers asking ridiculous prices for it.

Obviously, its just a generic battery operated tank toy, that shoots missiles and makes an engine sound. The generic toy came in several different colours. The UFO Missile tank came in orange, with a yellow turret and red missiles with an orange radar scanner.

My green and beige generic example, which I picked up at a Doncaster toy fair a few years back, cost me the princely sum of £1.50. On the box it's described as a Rocket Firing Tank. Everything worked, and it had four missiles, but the all important radar scanner was missing. However, that didn't prove a problem thanks to our own Bill Bulloch who supplied me with a spare one he had.

As  a  toy it looks pretty good and I suppose if you really stretched your imagination you could pretend it was one of the Moonbase Missile Launchers.

Here's a photo of the UFO Missile Tank box art showing a Moonbase Interceptor, Lunar Shuttle and a Shadair plane. There's also what looks like a Project SWORD Moon Crawler in the lower left hand corner.

This is the box that came with my generic example. Not quite as exciting I admit, but a lot cheaper.

A photo of another generic tank showing another colour scheme, with it's box showing some nice space artwork.

A Moonbase Missile Launcher.

  1. Fabulous summary of these toys Scoop. I've always loved the missile tank ever since I first saw it in Dennis nicholson's bible on andersonslia in the early 1990's. As a SWORDie the use of the Imai Moon Crawler box art for the missile tank box art has always drawn me to it. And i can't believe the price tag on that Rocket Firing Tank, £1.50! Bargain that! It's a pity C21 Toys or Dinky never issued the Moonbase. Missile launcher as part of their UFO ranges. It would have looked ace!

  2. The Moonbase missile launcher is another one that used the Tiger Joe Tank wheels and tracks.
