Remember sweet tobacco anyone?

Another of my favourite sweets as a kid was sweet tobacco.

Again not a politically correct name for kids stuff these days, back in the sixties it didn't matter.

Sweet tobacco was a mass of sweet sugar strings, usually reddish brown in colour.

The mass came in a small paper pouch like proper adult stuff and you took out out what you wanted to eat. The taste was super sweet, very sugary.

It had different names I think too. Sweet tobacco, Pirates' Gold, maybe even sweet spice, something like that.

Ring any sweet bells readers?

  1. I recall Big League Chew, that was chewing gum shreds in a pouch similar to chewing tobbaco.

    1. Was that American JD? Not something I recall here in the UK. Did Big League refer to Baseball?

    1. Yes I remember that Andy. Was it Pirates Gold? The pouch was made of waxed paper wasn't it?

  3. I recall Big League Chew. I think that was around the time of the gum rush when we got mini LP shaped gum inside scaled down album covers, bubblegum burgers inside plastic fast food clamshell packages (perfect for holding one set of D&D dice) and more. I do recall Gold Nugget gum,(1970s) vaguely goldish yellow gum chunks that came in a thin cloth bag that sealed with a pull string. Those were perfect to jam some GI Joe clothes into and toss in the back of the jeep or trailer.

    1. Those gum burgers are still in the sweet shops here Lance, I've never tried one. Never had the LP shaped gum in sleeves but that's such a cool idea. What were on the covers? As for Gold Nugget, now that's something I had here in Blighty in the Sixties. The little nuggets were delicious and like you say the muslin bag was fab for keeping stiff in! In fact I still have an old one of my mate's with some of his old bits in! It may have been called Gold Rush too.

  4. The bag of gum was called many things including Pirates Gold, guess it just varied by which company was making it. Seems nowadays that it is more yellow than gold. I seem to recall them being a much more gold color though. Guess it is either faulty old age memory or that the gold coloring caused cancer in lab rats and was changed ;).

As for the LP gum, it was called Chu-Bops. The were many artists, Pat Benetar, Gary Numan, Blue Oyster Cult and many more. More info can be found here http://www.chu-bops.com/ including pictures of all the "albums".

    1. Just checked out that site Lance. I'm amazed. They were released here in England too! What a fabulous idea it was. I love the fact they issued so many Beatles Elvis and Rolling Stones LP's. That's bubblegum passion!
