My new favourite hot drink is hot chocolate. It just goes so well with dark winter nights when I get home from work. Easy to make, it's ready in seconds using hot water and a dash of milk stirred into a mug. The brand I'm using is Cadbury's.
When I was a kid it was called cocoa, which my Mum made using a pan of hot milk. It's probably nostalgia but I recall that cocoa tasting absolutely divine and much better than hot chocolate. Cocoa was always given to me in a nice China cup on a saucer.
I think the cocoa brand was Rowntrees.
I remember a plastic mug with a lid on the form of a night cap, a bit like Scrooges. It may have been for Ovaltine rather than cocoa, but I bet it's collectable nowadays. I know there are large cups associated with hot chocolate in the shape of a piece of Cadbury's choccie, but these can be found easily in charity shops here.
Did you drink cocoa or hot chocolate as a kid readers? Do you now?
Ah, hate cocoa. It's rather different to Hot Choc. Have a hot choc every day as soon as I get in to work though I think this is giving me my high cholesterol now. Love the stuff though. Drat!
ReplyDeleteYour'e a hot choccer like me Yorkie! Do you make it with milk or hot water?
DeleteMilk. Too fattening though!
ReplyDeleteah, you take your time. I like it, milky chocolate! Yum.
DeleteI grew up on Ovaltine made with hot milk. Now, my taste buds are as diluted as my tastes and we just open a pack of Swiss Miss and make it with hot water. You have the option of using milk but we stick with water
ReplyDeleteHa, you were Ovalteenies Ed! It was a delicious beverage. Horlicks was another one here but that was drunk before bed for some reason. So what does Swiss Miss taste like? We don't have it in the UK.
DeleteActually, Swiss Miss is pretty good. We get a little lazy making it with water vs milk (don't know why, it tastes better with milk). It also comes with teeny tiny marshmallows in it. BTW, I still buy Ovaltine which we drink with cold milk. Funny huh? we'll drink Swiss Miss hot and Ovaltine cold. As soon as I've figured out why I'll let ya know (but don't hold your breath - it may take time) :-)
DeleteSounds lovely that Swiss Miss Ed. I used to drink coffee with powdered creamer when I was staying with friends in New Jersey in the Fall of 2005. I think the creamer had vanilla in it. It was delicious! Do you have creamer?
