THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO: UNDERGROUND

The latest Thunderbirds are Go episode is titled Underground and is written  by Benjamin Townsend.

HERE BE SPOILERS!
While I'm not giving the whole thing away. there's one or two things in this review which might spoil some peoples enjoyment of the episode, so if you'd prefer to watch it first I'll quite understand.

The story opens at an airport, with what looks like a steam punk space rocket taking off in the distance. A shady looking character wanders past an exposed rocket engine and a parked up Fireflash.

He talks into his wrist radio to the real brains behind this furtive escapade ( I wonder who that’ll turn out to be, kiddies!)

It’s all a prelude to an undercover sting involving Parker, Lady P and GDF. Even FAB 1 is undercover sporting a set of false numberplates which should have UFO fans jumping for joy and pointing to the screen!

The plot centres around a stolen magnetic repulser, built incidentally by Houseman Industries (nice one, Eddie) ,which the GDF want back and have enlisted the help of Lady P and co.

There’s plenty of action. Kayo gets to showcase her Thunderbird S . Early on in the story she arrives on the scene riding her TBS cycle, looking like Christian Bale’s Batman riding his Bat pod.

I am  beginning to think that Kayo is a bit of a big head these days, but may be the ice queen is about to melt when it’s revealed that the baddie, Banino (Voiced by Tomb Raider voice artist  Massimo Marinoni ) knows that Kayo has an Uncle Hood!

Is it time for Kayo to come clean and let the Tracy boys in on  her secret – I bet she has a word with Grandma first just to keep the tension going!

The annoying  Ned Tedford makes a cameo .  His accent has me reaching for my Thomas the Tank Engine trainset to throw at the screen.  I get the feeling that Ned is going to turn out to Jeff in disguise or something in a later episode, otherwise why would  anyone keep bringing back a mad bloke who talks to a plant!

Is Ted really so accident prone, or is he more than he seems?

But in spite of the ups and downs this is a cracking episode. The juvenile bits that cluttered the earlier episodes are fairly non -existent.  I could even imagine this episode as a excellent live action entry.

An exciting scene when Lady P uses completely inappropriate footwear to board a damaged GDF Flyer!

In my opinion, for what it’s worth this episode has got to be the best episode to date.

  1. IMHO a good espisode ruined by comedy relief Ned and a totally incompetent GDF.

    1. I wouldn't go as far to say ruined, Yorkie. Obviously, like you I'm not Ned's biggest fan, but I know what you mean about the incompetent GDF. Not quite the heroes we expect. I reckon Col. Casey will be having words the panicking Flyer pilot waving his arms in the air as he flees from his compromised aircraft, assuming he's still with us!

  2. deffo one of the better episodes, although last weeks was superior. great to see the hard edged Kayo getting a look in, her characterisation is excellent. Why we need the scouse idiot with the pot plant is beyond me, Parkers subtle comedy is more than enough to lighten the mood. Interesting to see the overarching plot elements connecting each episode developing, rather than stand alone 'situations' every week!

    1. The second half of this season has been much better than the first half, although Ned does seem to get the thumbs down from most vocal viewers - I wonder what the target audience think of him? I'm still wondering if he's as daft as he makes out. I do admit his stereotypical scouse accent really grates with me ,though.

I totally agree with you about the story arc, Bill. It seems to be moving a pace now, and judging by the synopsis for next weeks finale, 'Legacy' , it's hinted that the Hood is already on Tracy Island, and it's revelation time for Kayo, whether she wants to or not! Lets hope its as exciting as it sounds.
