DID YOU WRITE TO COMICS?

When I was a maturing ankle-biter in the late Sixties and early Seventies I wrote to magazines and comics on occasion.

More often than not it was about a back issue that I was missing rather than a critique of the current issue.

As far as I recall I didn't enter competitions either but my memory is sorely in need of an external hard drive to reboot it!

I did write to Film Review asking if they were planning on a Bruce Lee cover, which they obliged me and many other young shaolin monks with in July 1974. I was 13.

Did you write to magazines and comics readers or enter their competitions? Did you get a reply, get published or win the comp?

ADDENDUM:

ZZrobot has kindly sent me his letter which appeared in Spider-Man #111.

  1. All of the above. I didn't get first prize in the competition (Titans #2), but I was one of 10 specially commended from 100 runners-up. However my prize of a Treasury Edition never arrived. Had quite a few letters published in comics, especially back in the '70s.

  2. I did write to D C Thompson a long long time ago, with the idea of scripting and drawing a Commando comic. It never came to anything. I did do a 5 page first instalment of a sci-fi space opera, which I still have, but I just didn't think it was good enough, so sadly the art boards just languish in my mancave : (

  3. Comps not too much I'm afraid. I do however have somewhere a personal reply from Jim Shooter, then editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. Must have been early 80's. Do not remember what my letter was about, have to dig it up again.

    1. Hey ZZ, that's so cool. How clever of Marvel to create a No-prize! saves on postage! Do you mind if I blog your published letter?
