GLACIAL BIRTHPLACE: CWM IDWAL

In 1983 me and Mrs. Moonbase moved to Snowdonia in North Wales so I could study Countryside Management at Bangor. Whilst there I discovered what was probably the most dramatic single place I had ever seen, Cwm Idwal.

As part of a short break this week and seeking inspiration for a new Sarge storyline we visited Cwm Idwal again on Monday! Imagining mountain SWORD wars I took these short video clips as a reminder of our visit.

The cwm reflecting in its own lake on our way back to the start

Do you like mountains readers?

Welsh 101: cwm = corrie, cirque [birthplace of glaciers], Llyn = lake

Cwm Idwal is on the Nant Ffrancon pass, Snowdonia, Gwynedd.

  1. As many of your readers know quite a few of the guys at Celtica Radio are based in South Wales. The scenery is not quite as dramatic as Snowdonia, although this is the same part of the world that Richard Burton came from. I also found out quite recently that both me and at least one of the other guys practiced projecting our voices on the same section of mountain as he did.

    1. I didn't know that's what Richard Burton did but I can see why Bill. Cwms and valleys are great for spreading your wings. Cwm Idwal would make a superb natural stadium.

  2. Looks rugged but beautiful Bill! Having grown up in Wisconsin which, except for the Kettle Morraine area and Dells, is relatively featureless being near to mountains here is nice.

East: The Sunrise-Frenchman Mountains and the River Mountains. South and Southeast: The River Mountains and North McCullough Mountains. West. The Spring Mountain Range.

    4. It is! Unless you're a hiker or off-roader most of them are pretty much off limits to the average tourist but going up to Mt Charleston (in the Spring Mountains) is always a treat
