MY SEVENTIES DALEKMANIA

When Tom Baker took over from Jon Pertwee as Doctor Who in 1974, he soon made the part his own and his popularity meant a re-release by Marx  of their bump'n' go Dalek. For this seventies facelift it came in either red or yellow.

Being a big Tom Baker fan I was first in the queue to buy one, and remarkably I've still got it, and it's original box.

Palitoy got in on the act with their talking Dalek in 1975. I always though this was pretty accurate for time.

Again, this is my original bought at the time. Everything still works and, again I even managed to hang on to the box. This toy came in two colours, silver or red.

In 1976, Denys Fisher released their highly collectable Doctor Who range which included a Tom Baker doll, whose likeness was based on New Avenger Gareth Hunt for some reason.

The red top Denys Fisher Dalek was part of the range, and is probably the most sought after toy Dalek of all. At the time I managed to get the Tom Baker and the Leela doll as well as the Tardis, but the red top Dalek eluded me.

I have managed to get a less than perfect example in recent times. The sucker arm and gun stick are fake, and the box is badly water damaged, but I count myself lucky to have at least got one, without paying silly money.

Another seventies Dalek worth mentioning comes with the War of The Daleks game by Denys Fisher, which I also bought at the time. It does have some nice little Dalek play pieces, and some nice box artwork.

As Woodsy reminded me, here's the Dalek Bubblebath from 1976. Note the fact that the plunger and gunstick are the wrong way round, although right on the box.

  1. They look just great those red Marx Daleks Scoop. The yellow ones must look a bit odd though. I found one of the red ones at a car boot sale in the Nineties along with a black Dalek shampoo bottle. Both of them formed part of a trade with collector Chris Avis for one of my SWORD toys at the time! The Denys Fisher mini daleks are so neat as well. they look a bit like rolykins do you think?

  2. You know what, Woodsy I've got one of those 70's bubble bath Daleks and completely forgot to include it. I think a little post update is needed. : )
You're right about the Denys Fisher game Daleks, they do look a little Rolykin!

  3. I love that bubble bath. Such a great bottle shape! the plunger and arm being the wrong way, doesn't the whole yellow unit come out and turn round Scoop?

    1. My bubblebath Dalek seems pretty tight if it does, Woodsy. Knowing my luck I'd break it if I put pressure on it. All the ones I've seen look the same as mine so I think I'll leave it as it is.

  4. The very first Marx Bump 'n' Go Daleks had a thicker middle section, but within a very short space of time, a slightly thinner one was issued - initially for the large friction-drive version, I think, but this revised shell was soon also used for the battery-operated model. It was this later body that was used for the 1970s re-issue, as well as the Dapol '90s release. I've got two original Marx versions, plus two Dapol ones, as well as a Palitoy Dalek. I remember looking at a Denys Fisher one in the late '70s and not being too impressed, even 'though its lower section was more accurate than the Marx and Palitoy ones. Wish I'd bought it now. I've also got that little blue and gold Dalek from the game - plus loads of others, including Rolykins and a Cherilea Dalek. They're cheeky little rascals.

    1. Sounds like a nice collection Kid.
I must say I do like the look of my red re issue Marx. Plus, I bought it during the days when I really got into Who in a big way with Tom Baker (although, I'll admit I'm a big fan of Pertwee as well, but when he took over UFO was on the telly too and that kinda distracted me)
