I'd imagine it was for the long shots as there's very little detail. It also has a reflective dome which, presumably would have shimmered as the lower section revolved .
From what I understand the reflective dome would have remained static, while a motor in the top would turn the base and the reflective 'shields' giving a controlled spinning motion.
This was one of the very early models used on the show. Later ones were bigger and more cone shaped in the way we know. Also the larger ones had the top and lower dome static while the middle section spun. Smaller ones for long or bg shots only had the top dome remained static.
