DAN DARE MEETS DR WHO

I love it when fictional things I'm interested in cross over and connect in some way, especially when a fictional universe joins up with our own.

One such brief  instance takes place at the beginning of the feature film, 'Dr Who and The Daleks'.

While the rest of his young family are reading books on physics, Dr Who is completely absorbed reading a copy of the latest Eagle comic.

The cover can clearly be seen showing some smashing Keith Watson artwork.

Strangely, I can remember thinking as a youngster, why isn't Dr Who reading TV Century 21 which at the time of the film's release was full of Dalek related material and much more relevant than Dan Dare.

This much sought after edition was sponsored by the film makers and published a month before the film's release.

Of course, my young mind hadn't realised that the Eagle shown on screen would  have been published months before (it's dated 20 March, 1965, as opposed to the film's release date 23 August 1965)

And again, little seven year old Scoop hadn't twigged to something even more relevant to the plot in that if Dr Who had read the same dated  TV Century 21 issue as the Eagle he would have had prior knowledge of the Daleks and their machiavellian tactics.

Things could have turned out a lot different if only Dr Who had placed a regular order for TV Century 21 at the newsagent!

  1. I like it when shows crossover. The fourth Doctor was seen reading a book written by a character in The Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Serenity from Firefly can be seen in an episode of Battlestar Galactica. A character from Homicide life on the streets (I think), crops up in the X files.
