Wax On, Wax Off?

Last weekend I bought an old and very large SPV at a boot sale, Its the large plastic one that Vivid released but I'm not sure of the exact name.

One side is covered in thick globs of wax. Does anyone have a non-scratching method of getting wax off plastic?

  1. If that were textile, glass or ceramic I'd've said boiling water. For plastic you could try the opposite and freeze it off with an icepack.

If they're really thick blobs, you could try and cut off as much as possible with a sharp cutter, cutting parallel to the surface.
What's left you could try to dissolve with a hair drier, tho that might warp the plastic too. Maybe if you take your time at a low heat setting, and soak up molten wax with kitchen paper inbetween.
Or maybe by soaking with white spirit or lighter fluid - put a cotton wad soaked in the stuff on top of the blob for a bit (such degreasing fluids would be needed for the final mopping up & polish anyway).

In all truth I've never had to remove wax from plastic before, so I've no real idea of what you could expect. Go easy, take your time and try on a small spot first is the usual disclaimer.

Good luck and do tell what happens?

  2. One thing I've found that works very well is "Rocket WD40" and a paper kitchen towel. WD40 will also beautify the plastic too.

Any probs give me a call.
