INDESTRUCTIBLE COMIC STRIPS

Continuing with my look at some  vintage comic strip examples featuring Gerry Anderson's classic series we now get to Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons.

Both these strips come from the first Captain Scarlet Annual published in 1967.

The first strip is drawn by Keith Watson who also had a brief spell illustrating the Captain Scarlet strip in the TV21 comic.

The second strip features the prolific ( and hugely popular) Ron Turner. Both these strips use colour overlay but the quality of the dramatic art really shines through.

Joe 90 next time and, no doubt more Ron Turner

  1. Great memories.

Ron Turner stylish as always, but I particularly remember seeing the Keith Watson story when having a quick peek at the annual for the first time in WH Smith. It seemed to sum-up the whole new serious edge the series had, along with the extra detail of 'Century 21' at the time.

    Thanks for sharing.

  3. Mike Noble's Captain Scarlet artwork like all his stuff in TV 21 is super, Bill, although for me it's his work on Fireball XL5 that I find most nostalgic. But as there's plenty of reprint publications with that work in that's why I thought I'd mainly look at the annuals and the specials which don't get as much attention - plus there's lot of Ron Turner's art in them ; )

I have all the annuals and they still send a shiver down my spine when I see the fantastic art. Ron Turner, Mike Noble, Frank Bellamy, Ron Embledon...what a creative team. I love the annuals but I was always a little disappointed the art wasn't ever quite up to the weekly strips.

    1. I suppose a weekly dose of fantastic art kept us topped up to a high standard. Annuals were once a year and a sort of Christmas bonus. Glad you visited Moonbase central. Come back soon!
