METALLIC TOY MAGIC

internet

When I was a kid in the Sixties I loved metallic coloured die cast toy cars. My favourite Corgi junior was the purple racing Mini. On a June day like today I would be whizzing it down the garden path!

My favourite Hot Wheels Red Line was the Silhouette. I think Hot Wheels called the metallic colours Spectraflame.

My fave Corgi Rockets was the green Alfa Carabo Bertone. Sleek, metallic and very UFO. Cool or what!

When I found this little plastic tractor in a charity shop it took me straight back to my metallic toys, none of which have survived my childhood I'm sad to say.

Metallic colouring wasn't just confined to die-cast. In the world of Project SWORD and Spacex there are a few metallics like these cheapo Spacex knockoff  'Futuristic Space Vehicles'. I think my little green tractor would go with this range perfectly! Alas, I don't have any now but I used to have the Forklift!

In Project SWORD there is the unusual metallic blue Task Force number 1 made by Tarheel of the USA I assume. I've never seen one in the flesh so I can't be sure if it is Tarheel. I suppose only a carded version would confirm it is American for certain. Rare anywhere now, I think Bill may have had one!

Last but not least is this rare pale yellow metallic Task Force 3, which again I presume is a Tarheel variant. Certainly the sticker and engine is Tarheel. I've never seen this in the flesh either but I presume it came carded. This example, the only one I know of, was photographed by Dennis Nicholson in Australia.

Which metallic toys do you like readers?

  1. It was figures from the Micronauts line in the '70s that really grabbed me when I was a kid. A perfect mix of translucent and metallic plastic.

  2. Deffo hot wheels. But loved golden astronauts and the shiny chrome parts on space toys! Tragically, i did buy that green hawk and blue T1, kept the hawk, but thought the T1 was a cheap knock off and flogged it! Doh!
