To add to my post on Babylon 5 Micro Machines I’ve done some photos of four of the tiny models.
Because Babylon 5 used CGI for the space effects I thought I’d like to recreate that look. Well, unless you’re Pixar or Industrial Light and Magic I always think cutting & pasting something onto a background never looks quite right to me somehow, so I thought I’d try something else.
It might look like I’ve just cheated and pasted them onto a Photo shopped background. Well, while I admit there’s an element of Photoshop in them I haven’t gone as far as that.
Because they’re so small focusing in on them means the background is really out of focus, and using the flash ironically helps darken it. So to create the floating in space look I just painted out the tweezers that were holding the model in place and added the stars in Photoshop.
The fun element is experimenting with the colour and the look of the background meaning you never know what result you’re going to get.
It’s probably an old idea but I’ve not used it before.
I was quite pleased with the results and I can see this working on one or two other things.

That works really well. The Spacex one is somehow reminiscent lighting-wise, of Apollo photos of one ship through the window of another.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful Scoop. The Spacex shot reminds me of a Tarheel SWORD box. Have a look at one of their backgrounds. No idea how they did it though!
