PERSUADERS! SECRET PEN

While I was putting my piece about the Persuaders!  together I came across this ad from the back of a TV Action which I'd totally forgotten about.

The advert is for a send-away offer from Maryland Cookies  for a secret pen - the red end writes invisibly and the blue end reveals the secret writing. You also got a Persuaders Codewheel.

The artwork was by Frank Langford who drew the strip in the comic.

I must admit I was always a sucker for these kind of send- aways but for some reason I never bothered with this one.

Did anyone out there take up Maryland Cookies' offer?

  1. I had one of those pens, but it wasnt from cookies or connected with Persuaders. Im sure it was another mail in offer, but cant recall what!

  2. I don't think this is Frank Langford's work. He was a big name in advertising, and usually signed his work. I think this is someone emulating his style, and I'm betting that if you went through his Persuaders strips in Countdown/TV Action, you would probably find these frames had been copied from them, or similar.

  3. You may well be right, Shaqui. As it's unsigned I can only speculate or rely on hearsay . An alternative would be Harry Lindfield who also drew the strip in the comic, so if it turned out not to be Frank Langford, who as you say did a lot of advertising artwork , I'd put my money on him.

  4. Looking at it, Harry Lindfield is a possibility, but there is no real reason to suppose either artist would necessarily be contracted to do an advert strip unless specifically requested by the advertsing agency. Does anyone recall this advert appearing in any other comic?
