Its been a little while since we showcased a bona fide vintage space toy, so as i'm currently consolodating the Wotan Archive, I fetched out one of my favourites. Dating from about 1970, the Cragstan Americus Moon Buggy is distinct from most of its peers in that it lacks wheels. The Americus uses a unique horseshoe shaped leg arrangement which allows the buggy to walk, by moving a pair of feet forward in a shuffling motion. It appeared in an Airfix Toy catalogue along with a number of other Cragstan originals. Its interesting to see the Americus pick up the colours of the Stars and Stripes in its colour scheme too!

ReplyDeleteNever seen one in the flesh Bill but it is an odd looking toy. I've never heard of any other toy by Americus. It reminds me a little of the Moon Scout which also walked. But that only had 4 legs. This has 8! I can't imagine how it looks actually moving or how they made the mechanism. Wonder if its on You Tube?
