BLAKE'S 7

I read today that the classic BBC  sci-fi  series Blake’s 7 is to be remade.

Thirteen episodes will be made for the Syfy network.  According to Fremantle Media , the new series will be set in 2136 and will follow the same themes as the original.

I have to admit at the time of it’s screening, I quite liked  the series  in spite of the low budget effects and costumes that looked like they’d come from a jumble sale.

And I also felt that one or two of the cast members just didn’t come close to convincing me they were  intergalactic terrorists‘.  I'm not blaming the actors' mind, I put it down to BBC casting.

Strangely enough, I did like the pessimistic feel to the show, and the almost comedic cynicism that flowed from all the characters. It went a long way to giving the series it's appeal.

That didn’t stop me picking up the odd piece of  Blake's 7 merchandise though, including the Blake's 7 magazine which appeared in 1981.

I’ve even managed to retain the iron - on transfer which came with it.

The annuals which were the usual mix of text stories and unconnected filler material. To be fair the first one does have a stock photo of the Liberator and a feature on the characters.

Adaptations of scripts turned into paperbacks and written by Trevor Hoyle.

The Corgi Liberator. Small but perfectly formed!

There have been several attempts to re-make Blake's 7 in the past, including one which would have featured original cast member, Paul Darrow. Unfortunately nothing came of them and until I see it listed in the TV schedules I won't be holding my breath.

Personally, I'd be quite happy if the powers that be just repeated the original series.

  1. I agree with all of that, except the costumes from a jumble sale bit, I spent a fortune at BBC auctions when I was collecting original costumes!

    1. Oops! Sorry about that Kevin. It's nice to have original items for sure, but I'm afraid I still think you could have saved a fortune by just buying some tin foil and raiding the local charity shop which is probably what the BBC did! ; D

  2. Still got my Comet Miniatures plastic kit of the Liberator somewhere. Looking forward to the remake. Hope they keep the Liberator design the same. Classic.

  3. All due respect to the original BBC series but SyFy is likely to do it's atypical 'quality' work on a reboot which will leave little resemblance to the original than the title.

This is the network that brought us Sharktopus after all.

  4. I still have my Gorgi Liberator but alas one of the 'spires' has gone missing at some point it snapped and was lost. That white one looks great. Mine had yellow plastic bits, the green orb but the body is a silver grey in color.
